…The cleric placed one rough hand on Ariadne’s forehead and another on her chest. He closed his eyes and began chanting something that she couldn’t understand. A faint light emitted from his hands. Ariadne felt the light fill her consciousness until it was all that she knew and she whited out….
Reunification is the process where magic users that are not adherents of the Church of Unity lose the connection they have with their deity, thereby effectively stripping them of their magical powers. Suspected users of illicit magic are put on trial, which usually consists of putting them in a near-death situation that forces them to use magic to survive. As a result, many magic users confess their guilt before their “trial.”
The process works by blocking the conduits of energy flowing in and out of an individual. Without those connections available, the magic user is unable to receive their powers from their deity. At the end of the Reunification process, the heretic is then branded with a large letter “H” somewhere on their body, depending on the seriousness of the heresy. A necromancer is likely to be branded on the face, for example.
